Scottsdale Composer's Work Selected by Dallas
Wind Symphony for This Season's Fanfare Performances

DALLAS, Texas, August 26, 2003 - The Dallas Wind Symphony - America's Premier WindbandTM - has chosen a composition by Frank T. Darmiento of Scottsdale, Arizona, as one of seven fanfares it will perform during this season's concert series.
Darmiento's composition, titled The Guardian, was chosen from among 140 fanfares, brief and loud flourishes for brass instruments, that were submitted for consideration for the Dallas Wind Symphony's 2003-2004 season, which opens September 16.
This is the second year that the Dallas Wind Symphony invited composers from all over the world to submit fanfares, and the number of entries was nearly triple that of a year ago. Fifteen minutes before each concert performance, a small ensemble of Dallas Wind Symphony musicians performs one of the selected fanfares in the lobby of the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in what has become a highly popular feature of the symphony's concerts.
Darmiento is an active musician, composer, and conductor. He is principal trombonist for the San Marcos Symphony in Chandler, Arizona; lead trombonist for the Glendale College big band jazz ensemble; co-leader of the brass quintet Optima Brass; and euphonium player and resident composer for the Scottsdale Concert Band. His credits include music director and conductor for the Miss Arizona Pageant and Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards shows, as well as a guest conductor for the San Marcos and Scottsdale symphonies and the Scottsdale College Orchestra and Scottsdale Concert Band.
Darmiento, a registered professional engineer, is manager of the Transportation Research Center for the Arizona Department of Transportation in Phoenix. As a composer, his original works and arrangements have been performed by scores of professional, college, student, and community groups. He has written numerous commissioned works for a range of orchestras, bands, chamber groups, and others.
"After completing my fanfare, I hadn't yet selected a title for it," said Darmiento. "While pondering this dilemma, my year-old boxer looked and me quizzically, so I decided to name it after my 'guard dog,' Sassy. However, Ode to Sassy didn't have quite the right ring, so I called it The Guardian."
Darmiento's fanfare, which will be performed prior to the November 11, 2003, concert, and the other six pieces selected represent a range of styles, said Dallas Wind Symphony Associate Conductor David T. Kehler, and were chosen in part for the acoustics of the lobby where they are performed.
"There was a tremendous amount of good music submitted to us," Kehler said. "We narrowed the entries down to about 30 pieces, and then considered acoustics, the programming of each concert, and musical variety. Some of these may have jazz or pop or classical influence, and they are all excellent fanfares."
Other fanfares chosen for the coming season's concerts are:

September 16, 2003 - Seekers of the Truth by Jack Siegel, Miami, Florida
October 14, 2003 - Intrada by Laurie J. Kunzle, Hewitt, New Jersey
January 20, 2004 - Olympics Fanfare by Robert Washburn, Potsdam, New York
February 24, 2004 - Fanfare to Superheroes, by George Shaw, Los Angeles, California
March 23, 2004 - The Heart of It All by Thomas P. Rohrer, Logan, Utah
April 15, 2004 - Sacred Ground by Marvin Lamb, Norman, Oklahoma

The Dallas Wind Symphony plans to publish the new season's fanfares, along with those from the 2002-2003 season, as a two-volume sheet music set.
"The Dallas Wind Symphony fanfare competition is giving a real boost to the creation of new music, from composers at all different levels," Kehler said. "We are delighted to include Frank Darmiento's fanfare in this season's concert schedule."
